Jasprit Bumrah’s heroics in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar series, where he ended up with a whopping 32 wickets, took his overall tally to 64 thus breaking the record of legendary Kapil Dev (51 wickets) to register the most Test wickets by an Indian bowler in Australia, consolidated his spot at the top of the ICC Test bowlers’ rankings, maintaining his career-best rating of 908.

Despite being sidelined from bowling in the later part of the fifth and final Test in Sydney due to back spasms, Bumrah’s efforts helped his side to keep the Aussies in check throughout the series, and were also enough to keep Pat Cummins behind him at the No.2 spot.

Bumrah’s remarkable consistency has set a new benchmark for Indian bowlers, with his 908 rating points marking the highest-ever ICC ranking for an Indian bowler. His position at the top underscores India’s dominance in recent years, even though the Aussies managed to take the Border-Gavaskar Trophy back in their grasp.

The latest ICC rankings also witnessed a leap for Rishabh Pant in the Test batting chart, following his audacious 33-ball 61 in the SCG Test that lifted him to the No.9 position. Ravindra Jadeja, meanwhile, retained his position as the world’s top-ranked all-rounder, despite sharing the ninth spot in the bowling rankings with Australia’s Scott Boland.

Boland’s stellar 10-wicket match-winning performance in Sydney, helped him soar 29 places to break into the top-10 for the first time in his brief stop-gap international career. His previous best was 36th position that he had attained in June 2023 after picking five wickets in the ICC World Test Championship Final against India.

South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada climbed to third in the bowling chart after his six-wicket haul against Pakistan, while his teammate Marco Jansen, named Player of the Series after finishing with 10 wickets and 80 runs, moved up two slots to second among all-rounders.

Having confirmed their place in the ICC World Test Championship final, South African batters also made huge inroads after their 10-wicket victory over Pakistan. Ryan Rickelton match-winning 259 has lifted him 48 places to 55th position while captain Temba Bavuma (up three places to a career-best-equalling sixth position) and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne (up four places to 24th) have also advanced after notching centuries.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan celebrated a historic Test series win over Zimbabwe, with Rashid Khan re-entering the rankings at No.54 following a match-winning 11-wicket haul. Rahmat Shah and debutant Ismat Alam were among the Afghan batters, making significant gains.
